Procedure
A mixture of 2.97 g of 3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole, 1.32 g of paraldehyde, 3 ml of thionyl chloride and 20 ml of benzene was stirred for 1 hour at 40°-50° C. On evaporating off the solvent and excess thionyl chloride, there were obtained 4.97 g of crude, crystalline 2-(1-chloroethyl)-5-methyl-4-isoxazolin-3-one.
