Procedure

Sixty-five grams (0.49 m) of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid was added to a solution of p-tolylhydrazine (100 g, 0.44 m) and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (100 g, 0.49 m) in 2,500 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The reaction mixture was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere for 24 hours. The dicyclohexylurea was removed by filtration and the solution was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from 300 ml of isopropyl alcohol. There was obtained 71 g (68 percent) of 2,2-bishydroxymethyl propionic acid p-tolylhydrazide, m.p. 129° to 130° C. ##STR6##
