Procedure

Benzylamine (1.07 g; 10 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (1.54 g; 10 mmol) in methanol (10 cm3). An off-white solid formed almost immediately. The product was collected by filtration and recrystallized from water to produce white crystals. Found: C, 62.0%; H, 5.8%; N, 5.1%. Calculated for C14H15NO4 ; C, 64.30%; H, 5.74%; N, 5.36%. M.pt. 169°-170° C.
