Procedure
12.0 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were added to a suspension of 1.2 g of 3-amino-2-(benzylthiocarbonylthio)propionic acid hydrochloride in 35 ml of ethanol, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes, after which 12.0 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added, whilst ice-cooling. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, the resulting residue was dissolved in diethyl ether and the solution was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, to give 0.50 g of a colorless powder. This powder was recrystallized from ethyl acetate, to give 0.25 g of the title compound as colorless columnar crystals, melting at 148°-150° C.
