Procedure
2.09 g of (E)-(4-methoxy-3-nitrophenyl)allyl alcohol was dissolved in 21 ml of methylene chloride. To the solution was added 1.79 g of thionyl chloride with ice-cooling. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature. The solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure to obtain crystals of (E)-3-(4-methoxy-3-nitrophenyl)allyl chloride. The crystals were dissolved in 10 ml of methylene chloride.
