Hydrazine hydrate (0.361 mL) was added to a stirred solution of methyl ({4-[trans-4-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)cyclohexyl]phenyl}amino)(oxo)acetate (2260 mg) in EtOH (50 mL). The mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The precipitate was filtered off, washed with Et2O, and dried under vacuum overnight to give the title compound (Intermediate 43, 1845 mg) as a solid; 1H NMR δ 10.44 (1H, s), 10.20 (1H, s), 7.70 (2H, d), 7.21 (2H, d), 4.60 (2H, s), 3.60 (3H, s), 2.42 (1H, m), 1.79 (5H, m), 1.45 (2H, m), 1.11 (2H, m); MS m/e MH+ 334.
