Procedure
5.5 ml of chloroformic acid ethyl ester are added to 8.0 g of 4-(2-benzylsulfanyl-thiazol-5-ylmethyl)-morpholine in 60 ml of tetrahydrofuran, and the mixture is heated at reflux for 5 hours. The mixture is then cooled to room temperature, the solvent is removed by evaporation in vacuo and the residue is purified by chromatography on silica gel with ether-hexane 1:2. 2-Benzylsulfanyl-5-chloromethylthiazole having a melting point of 57-59° C. is obtained.
