A solution of HCl in 1,4-dioxane (4M, 5.5 mL) was added to thiomethylether (54) (152 mg, 0.55 mmol). The mixture stirred for 1 hour then the solvents removed in vacuo. The residue was azeotroped with CH3CN (5 mL) to obtain (3R,3aR,6S,6aS)-6-(methylthio)hexahydro-2H-furo[3,2-b]pyrrol-3-ol which was used without further purification.
