Procedure

Benzophenone imine (39.8 g, 0.22 mol) is added to a solution of 2-amino-4-methyl-1,3-thiazole (30 g, 260 ml) in toluene (450 ml) and heated at reflux under an inert atmosphere for 18 h. The mixture is cooled to room temperature and washed with citrate buffer (2×250 ml), water (2×250 ml), brine (2×250 ml), dried (MgSO4 and decolourising charcoal), filtered and evaporated to an orange solid.
