A solution of (2E)-3-(dimethylamino)-1-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one (0.49 g, 2 mmol) and phenylguanidine carbonate salt (0.30 g, 2.2 mmol) in NMP (4 ml), is stirred at 120° C. for 2 days. It is then cooled to room temperature and diluted with water (40 ml). The resulting suspension is filtered, and the precipitate is washed with 50% ammonium chloride solution, water, and hexanes, and then dried in vacuo to give 0.56 g of an off-white solid; mp 162-163° C.; HRMS: calcd for C17H12F3N3, 315.0983; found (ESI_FTMS, [M+H]1+), 316.1048.
