A mixture of 3′-fluoro-4′-{[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-methyl-6-oxo-4-propyl-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-5-yl]methyl}biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (2 g), vinyl acetate (0.82 mL), sodium carbonate (0.28 g), bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)diiridium(I) dichloride (0.02 g) and toluene (10 mL) were stirred at 100° C. for 48 hr. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water and then with saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a colorless amorphous solid (1.59 g, 75%).
