Procedure
1.3 g (0.00354 mol) of 5-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4-methoxymethyl-β-carboline-3-methanol is stirred for 192 hours under argon at room temperature with 1.74 g (0.02 mol) of manganese dioxide in 200 ml of dichloromethane. The manganese dioxide is suctioned off, the filtrate concentrated by evaporation and the residue recrystallized from ethanol. Thus 0.96 g (74% of theory) of 5-(4-chlorobenzyl)-4-methoxymethyl-β-carboline-3-carbaldehyde is obtained, melting point 248°-250° C.
