Procedure

A 500 ml round bottom flask equipped with a reflux condenser, a mechanical stirrer, a thermometer, a dropping funnel and an efficient N2 blanket, is charged with 30.0 g (0.25 mole) of 4-vinylphenol, 21.8 g of pyridine and 300 ml of chloroform. The contents are then cooled down to 5 degrees C., and 25,3 g of vinyl chloroformate is added dropwise via the dropping funnel with constant stirring and the temperature maintained at 5 degrees or below. The temperature is then allowed to rise to ambient temperature and the mixture stirred overnight. The reaction mixture is then passed through a silica gel column and dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered. After the solvent is removed under pressure, the named product is recovered.
