A mixture of 3-methoxy-N-methylaniline (44 g) and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate (69 ml) was heated on a steam bath for 2 hours, the ethanol formed being removed by distillation. The residue was cooled to ambient temperature to give the novel compound diethyl (3-methoxy-N-methylanilino)methylenemalonate as an oil.
