Procedure
To a solution of (IV) (12.0 g; 0.044 mol) in methanol (45 mL) was added at 80° C. concentrated hydrochloric acid (45 mL). After continued heating at 80° C. for 15 min, the reaction mixture was evaporated to ca. 40 mL and then extracted with chloroform (3×100 mL). The combined organic phases were dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give (III) (5.45 g; 58%), M.p. 127.0°-128.0° C. Anal. C9H12N2O4.
