Benzylamine (75 g, 0.70 mol) and (−)-tartaric acid (100 g, 700 mol) were heated in boiling xylene (1.0 L) in a Dean-Stark apparatus. After cooling, the product was collected, washed with acetone, and recrystallized from EtOH to afford the product (120 g, 77%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.39-7.20 (5H, m), 6.27 (2H, d), 4.58 (1H, d), 4.52 (1H, d), 4.38 (2H, m).
