To a solution of ethyl(2S)-3-[4-(2-{butyl[4-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl]amino}-2-oxoethoxy)phenyl]-2-ethoxypropanoate (0.311 g, 0.61 mmol) in acetonitrile (30 mL) was added aqueous 0.10 M LiOH (15 mL) and the solution was stirred at room temperature overnight. After acidification with 5% HCl, the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×100 mL) and the combined organic phase was washed with 5% HCl (100 mL) and brine (100 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo to afford 0.232 g (79%) of a colourless oil.
