Procedure

To a cooled (0° C.) solution of 2-[1-(2-amino-ethylamino)-2-methyl-propyl]-3-benzyl-7-chloro-chromen-4-one (4.1 g, 11 mmol) and triethylamine (2.2 mL, 17 mmol) in methylene chloride (100 mL) was added a solution of p-toluyl chloride (1.7 g 11 mmol) in methylene chloride (20 mL). The reaction was maintained at 0° C. for 2 hours, at which time it as diluted with ether (250 mL). The resultant solution was washed with 1 N hydrogen chloride (2×200 mL), saturated sodium bicarbonate (200 mL) and brine (150 mL), dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (0→60% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to (give 2.8 g, (50%) of the title compound. MS(ES+) m/z 503 [M+H]+.
