Procedure

To a solution of (Z)-1-phenylcyclohept-4-enecarbonitrile from step B in toluene (15 mL) at −78° C. was added diisobutylaluminum hydride (1.0 M solution in toluene, 4.88 mL), and the resulting solution was stirred at −78° C. for 2 h. Saturated ammonium chloride was added drop wise followed by ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 2.21 (6H, m), 2.37 (2H, m), 5.69 (2H, s), 7.30 (5H, m), and 9.38 (1H, s).
