In the manner given in example 20 a suspension of 7-chloro-5-(o-chlorophenyl)-2-[(3-phthalimido-1-methylacetonyl)amino]-3H-1,4-benzodiazepine, ethylene ketal in concentrated sulfuric acid is stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 18 hours and the reaction mixture poured onto ice, treated with base and the product isolated to give 8-chloro-1-(phthalimidomethyl)-2-methyl-6-(o-chlorophenyl)-4H-imidazo[1,2-a][1,4]benzodiazepine.
