Procedure
283 g (2 mols) of 4-chloro-2-methylphenol, 300 g of potassium carbonate and 2 g of potassium iodide are suspended in 2 1 of anhydrous acetone and the mixture is heated to the boil. 359 g (2 mols) of bromopinacolone are then gradually added dropwise while stirring and the reaction mixture is heated for 5 hours under reflux. Thereafter, first the solvent and then the ketone are distilled off under reduced pressure. 381 g (79% of theory) of 1-(2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy)-3,3-dimethyl-butan-2-one of boiling point 109°-112° C/ 0.1 mm are obtained.
