3-Phenyl-5-chloroindazole (2.29 g), paraformaldehyde (0.35 g), morpholine (1.91 g) and 1N aqeous sodium hydroxide solution (1 ml) were added to 40 ml of ethanol and the mixture was allowed to react under reflux. The reaction mixture was concentrated and then the residue was dissolved in chloroform, washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was treated with column chromatography to obtain 1.7 g of 1-morpholinomethyl-3-phenyl-5-chloroindazole having a melting point of between 155°-156° C after recrystallization from methanol.
