Procedure
0.87 g of methyl (3S)-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-acetate is dissolved in 12 ml of tetrahydrofuran, and 5 ml of 1N NaOH are added thereto. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The mixture is evaporated to remove the solvent. The residue is dissolved in water, and the aqueous solution is extracted with ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer is acidified with 10% HCl, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is washed with a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried and then evaporated to remove the solvent. 630 mg of (3S)-2-benzyloxycarbonyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-acetic acid are obtained as pale yellow powder. Yield: 75%
