3-(3-Acetylthio-2-methylpropanoyl)-2-ethyl-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid (1 g.) is dissolved in a mixture of water (3 ml.) and concentrated ammonia (3 ml.) under a blanket of argon. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for thirty minutes and acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The organic layer is dried and concentrated to dryness to vacuo to yield 2-ethyl-3-(3-mercapto-2-methylpropanoyl)-4-thiazolidinecarboxylic acid.
