Procedure

Compoud 1 (1 g) was dissolved in a mixture of ethanol (5 ml) and 85% hydrazine hydrate (2 ml). After 24 h the solvent was evaporated and residual traces of hydrazine removed by co-evaporation with toluene to give 8-hydrazinocarbonyloctyl β-D-galactopyranoside as a white solid which was recrystallized from ethanol, mp 194°, [α]D18 -2.16° (c 1.1, water), 92% yield.
