28 g of finely powdered p-nitrophenol were added to 25.6 g of adipic anhydride and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight, whereupon the contents of the flask solidified. The mass was melted, whilst stirring, and the melt was dissolved in 350 ml of ethyl acetate. The solution was extracted several times with water and the ethyl acetate was distilled off in vacuo. The residue was recrystallised three times from acetonitrile. Yield: 45.2 g (85% of theory) of melting point 104°-105° C.
