Procedure

2-(4-Ethylbenzyl)benzo[b]thiophene-3-sulfonyl chloride was prepared by the method of Example 40B with DMF (5.4 mmoles, 0.42 ml), sulfuryl chloride (4.6 mmoles, 0.37 ml) and 2-(4-ethylbenzyl)benzo[b]thiophene (2.7 mmoles, 0.69 g). Flash chromatography (2% ethyl acetate/hexanes) provided 0.43 g (45%) of an orange solid.
