Procedure

A mixture of 0.90 g (2.38 mM) of 1-(2-methyl-6-benzthiazolyl)-3-[1-(phenylmethyl)-4-piperidinyl]-1-propanone (Example 27) and 0.33 mL (3.1 mM) of 1-chloroethyl chloroformate was refluxed in 10 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane for 2 hours. The resulting brown solution was cooled to room temperature and diluted with 15 mL of water. This mixture was extracted twice with 20 mL of ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate extracts were combined, dried (Na2SO4), and evaporated to yield 1.0 g (100%) 1-(2-methyl-6-benzothiazolyl)-3-[(1-chloroethylformyl)-4-piperidinyl]-1-propanone as an oil.
