Procedure
0.9 g of the product obtained in Step 2 is hydrogenated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure in the presence of 1 ml of Raney nickel and1 ml of concentrated NH4OH in 20 ml of ethanol. After 5 hours' contact, the catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate is evaporated to dryness. The residue is taken up in 100 ml of methylene chloride and extracted with 1N hydrochloric acid. The acid phase is rendered basic with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with methylene chloride. After washing, drying and evaporation, 0.76 g of the expected product is isolated.
