A mixture of 2.7 g of 1-(4-cyanophenyl)-4-ethoxycarbonyl-2-methyl-3-[4-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]-2H-pyrazol-5-one, 1.8 g of potassium carbonate, 73 ml of ethanol and 8 ml of water was refluxed under heating for 9 hours. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature, and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure. The resulting crude crystals were suspended in chloroform, and the suspension was adjusted to pH 2 to 3 with dilute hydrochloric acid. The crystals were collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure to give 1.6 g of the title compound as pale gray crystals.
