A mixture of 40 g (0.13 mol) of ethyl 3-amino-6-(phenylmethoxy)benzofuran-2-carboxylate, 18 ml (0.19 mol) of ethyl chloroformate and 51 g (0.37 mol) of potassium carbonate in 400 ml of benzene is heated at reflux for 18 hours and is then cooled and filtered and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure. 41 g of product are obtained by recrystallization of the residue from diisopropyl ether.
