11.4 g of 3-[(ethoxycarbonyl)amino]-6-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid are heated at 220-225° C. A vitreous gum is obtained which is taken up in tetrahydrofuran until dissolved. The solvent is evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue is purified on a silica column with a 10/90 mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane. 19.4 g of product are obtained.
