Procedure
To a solution of 6.07 g of diethyl 5-allylpyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate in 20 mL of methanol, stirred under nitrogen, is added slowly a solution of 3.3 g of sodium hydroxide in 13 mL water. After diluting the reaction mixture with 10 mL each of water and methanol, it is heated at reflux for 13/4 hours. The reaction is cooled in an ice bath, acidified to pH 3 with concentrated hydrochloric acid, and concentrated in vacuo to a damp solid. This solid is reevaporated from pyridine to afford the product as a brown solid, mp>250°(dec).
