Procedure

Sodium hydride (64 mg, 2.8 mmol) was added to 2-butyl-5-chloro-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (647 mg, 2.8 mmol) in anhydrous 1,4-dioxane (3 mL). After 0.25 hour, a solution of 5-bromo-1-chloro-indane (696 mg, 3.0 mmol)in dioxane (2.0 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was heated at 110° C. for 20 hours, cooled to room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The crude residue was chromatographed on SiO2 -gel using 50% ethyl acetate/hexanes to give 486 mg of a colorless oil. 1H NMR (250 MHz, d6 -DMSO): d 7.55 (s, 1 H), 7.36 (d, 1 H), 6.86 (d, 1 H), 6.10 (t, 1 H), 4.20 (q, 2 H), 3.25-2.65 (m), 1.65 (m, 2 H), 1.35 (m, 2 H), 122 (t,3H), 0.90 (t, 3 H).
