Procedure
50 ml of a 10% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were added dropwise, with stirring, to a mixture of 7.36 g of 1,4-dimethoxy-2-naphthylmethyltriphenylphosphonium chloride [prepared as described in step (a) above] and 75 ml of a 30% V/v aqueous solution of formaldehyde, and the resulting mixture was stirred for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was neutralized with 3N aqueous hydrochloric acid, after which it was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, using a 24:1 by volume mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate as the eluent, to give 2.45 g of the title compound as a pale yellow oil.
