Procedure

A 1-L flask equipped with a stirrer was charged with 110 g (0.56 mol) of the 2,6-bis(acetoxy)-8-thiatricyclo[2.2.1.13,5]octane prepared in REFERENCE PRODUCTION EXAMPLE 1 and 600 mL of methanol, to which 84 g (1.0 mol) of sodium hydrogen carbonate was added with stirring. The mixture was heated to a temperature at which methanol served as the reflux, at which it was held for 4 hours. It was then cooled to room temperature and filtered to remove the residue.
