Procedure
3-(3-Isopropenyl-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl)-propionic acid methyl ester (2.2 g, 8.3 mmol) was treated with MeOH (5 mL) followed by water (5 mL) To this heterogeneous reaction mixture was added 37% hydrochloric acid (4 mL). This reaction mixture was heated to 60° C. for 20 min. The reaction remained as a clear homogeneous solution after heating. The reaction mixture was diluted with CH2Cl2 and washed with water. The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to afford 1.7 g of the desired product as a white solid. This product was used for the next reaction without further purification.
