Procedure
To a stirred solution of 3-(3-Isopropenyl-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl)-propionic acid methyl ester (4.8 g, 18.4 mmol) in ethanol (30 ml) and water (30 ml) was added 37% hydrochloric acid (24 ml). The resulting solution was warmed to 60° C. for twenty minutes and cooled. The reaction was diluted with dichloromethane and water. The layers were separated and the organic phase was dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to give 3.5 g (86%) of the desired product as an oil which solidified on standing. Used without further purification.
