1 NaOH solution (60 mL, 60 mmol) is added to a solution of ethyl 5-methyl-1-oxo-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-[1,4]diazepino[1,2-a]indole-8-carboxylate (7.0 g, 24 mmol) in ethanol (75 mL). The reaction mixture is refluxed for 1.5 h. Then the reaction mixture is acidified with 1M HCl and ethanol is removed under vacuum. The resulting solid is filtered, washed with water and dried to afford the title compound (5.8 g, 92%) as a solid.
