Trifluoroacetc acid (4 ml) and thioanisole (1.2 ml) were added to 1-{5-[(4-methoxybenzyl)amino]pyridin-2-yl}cyclohexanecarbonitrile (632 mg) and stirred at 40° C. for 1.5 hours. An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was added and the mixture was adjusted to pH 10. The solution was extracted with ethyl acetate, the organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was purified with silica gel chromatography (n-hexane/ethyl acetate) to give the titled compound (360 mg) as a solid.
