Procedure
1,1-dimethoxy-N,N-dimethylmethanamine (100 g, 839 mmol, 1.02 equiv.) and 1,1-dimethoxypropan-2-one (97 g, 821 mmol) were added and stirred at 110° C. for 3 hours. The produced methanol was removed by a Dean-Stark apparatus. After the solution was cooled to room temperature, the remaining volatile materials were removed in vacuo to provide 130 g of the crude product, (E)-4-(dimethylamino)-1,1-dimethoxybut-3-en-2-one (1) (130 g, 143 g theoretical, 91%). LC-MS m/z 283 (M+1). Reference: WO 2006/0097341A1, pg 67.
