Procedure
To a chilled (0° C.) solution of 2,2,2-trichloro-1-(1-{2-oxo-2-[5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl]ethyl}-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)ethanone (105 mg, 0.26 mmol) in MeOH (7 mL) was added an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (1 M), (0.26 mL, 0.26 mmol). The solution was allowed at room temperature. After one hour the reaction was complete (monitored by LCMS). The mixture was acidified with 1 M HCl (aq), diluted with water (10 mL) and partially concentrated in vacuo to remove the MeOH. The aqueous mixture was then extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×4 mL). The organic layers were combined, dried (MgSO4), filtered and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo to yield methyl 1-{2-oxo-2-[5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl]ethyl}-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate as a brown oil (85 mg, quantitative yield) ESI-MI m/z [M+H]+ 312.9.
