Procedure

1-(4-Methanesulfonyl-3-trifluoromethyl-benzyl)-2-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-3-yl]-acetic acid methyl ester: To a stirred solution of (2-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-3-yl)-acetic acid methyl ester ((12.8 g, 62.8 mmol) in dry DMF (200 ml) under an inert atmosphere of Argon is added dropwise, BEMP (19.9 ml, 69.1 mmol) over five minutes. After stirring at room temperature for 1 hour, the resulting solution is added dropwise to a stirred solution of 1-bromomethyl-4-methanesulfonyl-3-trifluoromethyl-benzene (23.9 g, 75.4 mmol) and stirred for 18 hours. The reaction is concentrated in vacuo with toluene and the resulting oil is purified by chromatography on silica eluting with iso-hexane/acetone (15:1). The crude is further purified by dissolving in hot ethyl acetate and refluxing in the presence of charcoal for 5 minutes. The solution is filtered and the solvent is removed in vacuo. The resulting solid is re-crystallized from ethyl acetate/iso-hexane to yield the titled product as a white solid. (MH+441).
