Procedure

A solution of N-Benzoyl-3,4-dihydro-7-methoxyspiro-[naphthalene-3,4'-piperidine]-1-one (3.4 g, 7.8 mmole) in ethanol (100 mL) is treated with 6 N HCl (100 mL) and heated to reflux for 5 hours. The reaction is cooled to 90 ° C. and heated at this temperature for 16 hours. The reaction is cooled to room temperature, diluted with 300 mL water and extracted with two 75 mL portions of ethyl acetate. The aqueous phase is then diluted with ethanol (1 L) and concentrated at reduced pressure to dryness. The residue is crystallized from ethanol (100 mL) to give the product as the hydrochloride.
