300 mg of 3-(3-thienyl)benzaldehyde was dissolved in 3 ml of acetone, and 441 mg of potassium carbonate was added. The mixture was sirred overnight at room temperature, and then the solvent was evaporated. The residue was worked up in a customary manner, and purified by medium-pressure liquid chromatography [hexane/ethyl acetate =3/1] to give 1-[3-(3-thienyl)-phenyl]-3-oxo-1-butanol as a colorless oil.
