6-t-Butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl-4-hydroxytetrahydropyran-2-one (1.0 parts) was dissolved in toluene and p-toluenesulphonic acid (0.1 parts) was added. The reaction mixture was heated at reflux with removal of water via a Dean and Stark apparatus. The cooled reaction mixture was then washed with water and evaporated to give 6-t-butyl dimethylsilyloxymethyl-5,6-dihydropyran-2-one (0.3 parts).
