Procedure
A mixture of N-acetyl-2-keto-3-amino-4-methylpentane (6.33 g, 40.3 mmol) and 6M hydrochloric acid (65 ml) was heated at reflux overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, ethanol (100 ml) was added and the mixture concentrated under reduced pressure. The mixture wastriturated with ether to give a precipitate which was collected by filtration. Crystallisation from acetone gave 2-keto-3-amino-4-methylpentane hydrochloride (2.9 g, 63%) as a white crystalline solid.
