Procedure

To a solution containing 0.85 g of ethyl 2-cyano-3-(3,4-dihydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)acrylate (Example 81) in 70 ml of dry ethanol 0.3 g of sodium borohydride was gradually added. The solution was stirred for 0.5 h at room temperature, acidified with hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The solvent was evaporated yielding0.55 g (75%) of yellow crystals, m.p. 149°-152° C.
