Procedure
In a reaction flask was placed 100 ml of decahydronaphthalene which was then heated to 190° C. To the decahydronaphthalene was added 3,6-bis(phenylthio)-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid (51 g) in small portions. Heating was continued for 1 hour. After cooling, 60 ml of 6 N HCl was added resulting in the formation of a solid. The solid was collected and made alkaline with NaOH and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic layer was dried, concentrated and distilled using a Kugelrohr apparatus to give 37 g of 2,5-bis(phenylthio)pyridine, b.p. 190° C. (0.05 mm Hg).
