Procedure

FSO2(CF2)4OCH2C6H5 was treated with excess aqueous lithium hydroxide as described in Preparation of Precursor 3 except that the solution was heated at 75° C. for eighteen hours. After neutralization of the excess hydroxide with solid carbon dioxide, it was noted that a lower fluorochemical-containing phase was still present. Additional lithium hydroxide was added as well as about 50 mL of methanol and the reaction mixture heated to 84° C. for an additional eighteen hours. This solution was then neutralized in the usual manner and LiO3S(CF2)4OCH2C6H5 was isolated after alcohol extraction (9.4 g).
